List Of Ex-Military Brass Denouncing 'Don't Ask' Grows To 15

(Washington, D.C.) Following on the heels of three retired top servicemembers who came out last week and issued a statement condemning 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell', a dozen other former officers Tuesday signed onto the measure.

The group includes gay and non-gay former servicemembers. Among the new signatories is former Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb served under President Reagan, and has now become one of the most prominent Republican political figures to speak out against the gay ban.

The list also includes Vincent W. Patton III, who until his retirement was the top enlisted person in the Coast Guard.

“Americans long ago desegregated our military,” the statement says. “Our courts, local governments and corporations have affirmed that gays are an integral and valued part of the American family. Our military too should lead in defense of liberty and freedom for all.”

Also signing the document were retired army colonels Robert V. Barnes, Jr., Graham E. Beard, Margarethe Cammermeyer, Paul W. Dodd, Eugene A. “Andy” Leonard; Major General Vance Coleman, (US Army, Ret.); army Brigadier General Evelyn P. Foote; Rear Admiral John Hutson, (Ret.); naval Captain Mike Rankin, (USNR Ret.); and air reserve Major General Charles Starr, Jr. (Ret).

“From the American Revolution to the conflict in Iraq, gay service members have shed blood on the battlefield, sacrificed for our fellow citizens, and achieved the highest military ranks,” said C. Dixon Osburn, the executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.

“The Pentagon and Congress should lead the effort to repeal this law. It was a bad idea in 1993 and it is a bad idea today.”

Last week two brigadier generals and a rear admiral, all retired, came out in interviews with the New York Times, to mark the 10th anniversary of "don't ask, don't tell". (story)
