(Vatican City) Pope John Paul Sunday accused gays and lesbians of distorting the true nature of marriage and family in what he calls "a misunderstood sense of rights." Speaking to pilgrims at the Vatican the pope said marriage is a "human" and "divine" gift that society has to defend.
It was the latest in a year long series of attacks on same-sex marriage.
"In our times, a misunderstood sense of rights has sometimes disturbed the nature of the family institution and conjugal bond itself," he said. "It is necessary that at every level, the efforts of those who believe in the importance of the family based on matrimony unite."
Belgium, the Netherlands, and two Canadian provinces have legalized gay marriage. Last month, the highest court in Massachusetts ruled that it was unconstitutional for the state to bar gay couples from marriage. No states have legalized gay marriage.
In July, the Vatican issued a 12 page denunciation of same-sex marriage. The
document, from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that Catholic
politicians had a "moral duty" to oppose laws granting legal rights
to gay couples. (story)
"Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level
as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behavior ... but would
also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity,"
the document said.
