Texas considers banning Gay Foster Parents

(Austin, Texas) Legislation to prevent gays and lesbians from becoming foster parents has been presented in the Texas legislature.

The bill, authored by Representative Robert Talton (R-Houston), has been referred to the House Committee on Juvenile Justice and Family Issues.

"This measure is one of the worst anti-gay parenting measures anywhere in the country," said Aimee Gelnaw, executive director of the Family Pride Coalition.

"Not only would it prohibit LGB people from becoming foster parents, this bill also calls for the removal of children currently living in foster homes with LGB parents. We know that children need loving and stable homes, and this bill runs in complete opposition to the best interest of previously displaced Texas children."

The Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas is sponsoring “Rally for Youth, Rally for Our Families” March 16 on the steps of the Texas State Capitol.

"We must do all we can to defeat this hate-based measure,” said Randall Ellis, executive director of the (LGRL).

“This bill would only do harm to Texas children. We must make every committee member on Juvenile Justice and Family Issues understand that this bill would wreak havoc on the lives of displaced, abused and neglected children.”
