Oil Company add Gay Nondiscrimination Policy

ConocoPhillips, the third largest oil and gas company in the US has reversed an earlier decision and has now agreed to implement a written non discrimination policy that includes gays and lesbians.

Last week it was discovered that when Phillips Petroleum and Conoco merged last year, Conoco's written policy guaranteeing non discrimination for GLBT workers had been dropped.

After pressure by gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign, and under the threat of a shareholder challenge by gay friendly stockholders the company agreed Wednesday to reinstate the written guarantee and extend it to employees of the former Phillips Petroleum.

"The management committee has amended (effective immediately) the company's EEO policy to include the term 'sexual orientation' to more accurately reflect this commitment," a company statement said.

"ConocoPhillips is and always has been deeply committed to fair and nondiscriminatory treatment for all employees".
The move was immediately hailed by HRC.

"We applaud ConocoPhillips for acting responsibly to meet the needs of its diverse work force," said HRC Executive Director Elizabeth Birch.

"There are a lot of gay, lesbian and bisexual ConocoPhillips employees who will surely feel better about going to work today knowing they have the full support of management."

ConocoPhillips' move leaves Exxon Mobil Corp. as the only U.S. company ever to rescind a sexual orientation non-discrimination policy.

ExxonMobil rescinded Mobil's non-discrimination policy in December 1999 when the companies merged. At the same time, it closed Mobil's domestic partner benefits program to any more employees.

However, a total of 307 of the Fortune 500 have non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation
