(Chattanooga, Tennessee) In a homophobic attack that even shocked members of his own party U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp has labeled homosexuality a "sin" and a "sickness" that must be "controlled."
The Bible is "riddled with examples of how homosexual behavior is not just a sin" but "an aberration," he said. "That it is so unnatural and that it is a sickness in the sense that it's a sin and needs to be dealt with and people need to change their behavior and change their ways," the Chattanooga Republican said Monday.
Wamp is one of 96 House members who have signed on to a constitutional amendment that would deny gays the right to marry and bar states from recognizing domestic partnerships. The Congressman said gay marriage must be constitutionally banned because the U.S. Supreme Court could decide to legalize such unions.
Wamp, who is considering a run for the US Senate, said his "view of what policy should be is based on the biblical values from the Old Testament forward."
But he also said he doesn't believe he's imposing his religious views on anyone. Within "the privacy of their own home, they have the right to do whatever they want to," he said.
"When they come to the courthouse though and ask to be legitimized, that's where policy makers have to decide who is going to be legitimized."
Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, also a Republican distanced himself from Wamp's rhetoric. Alexander, in a statement also said he is opposed to same-sex marriage, but sees no need to amend the constitution.
"Our laws respect different kinds of relationships, but no state permits couples of the same sex to marry.
"The Supreme Court did not change that, so I think a bill currently in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage is unnecessary."
Gay activists called Wamp's remarks inflammatory.
"I will say also that members of government and legislatures have no place whatsoever in proclaiming that something is an illness, an aberration or anything else," said National Gay and Lesbian Task Force spokesperson Roberta Sklar. "And that kind of divisive language, filled with hate and prejudice, is in no way in the best interests of our country."
