Gay Bishop Agrees To Meet Archbishop In London

(London) The pressure is mounting on Gene Robinson the openly gay Episcopal bishop-elect of New Hampshire to step down before his consecration.

Robinson agreed Tuesday to an emergency meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the worldwide leader of the Anglican faith.

The meeting will take place at Lambeth Palace the headquarters for the Church, and Anglican observers say it will be a last ditch attempt to encourage Robinson to withdraw and avoid a schism in the Church.

Last week the palace was the scene of a two day emergency summit involving Williams and church leaders from throughout the world.

In a unanimous statement the bishops said that the Anglican Church's global communion will be ``put in jeopardy'' if U.S. Episcopalians proceed with Robinson's consecration. (story)

Monday, Williams' predecessor as Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, told an audience in Virginia that a crisis "could be avoided if the Rev. Gene Robinson steps down."

But in agreeing to the meeting with Williams, Robinson said that if the Archbishop asked him directly to step aside he would take that into his "prayer life." But, he said the words of Williams, would not be enough to dissuade him.

Sunday in his first public comments since the worldwide leaders of the Anglican faith condemned his election, Robinson said that he believes God wants him to go forward. (story)

Conservative opposition to his election in both the US and the UK is fueled by the Church in much of Africa. The Anglican Church of Nigeria has the largest number of members outside of Britain. Nigeria and Churches in other parts of Africa and Asia have threatened to split over the issue of gays in the faith. A number of Episcopal churches in the US are withholding funds from the national organization in protest to Robinson's election.
