Student Sues After School Expels Him For Being Gay

(Jupiter, Florida) An 18-year-old is suing a Christian private school for expelling him after it found out he is gay.

Jeffrey Woodard said Jupiter Christian School expelled him three days after his instructor pulled him out of Bible class on Aug. 15 and asked him in confidence if he is gay.

When Woodard answered "yes," a school official called his mother, Carol Gload.

The school gave the teen three choices: get counseling for his `problem'; voluntarily leave the school; or be expelled.

"I didn't think Jeffrey needed therapy ... so when I explained he doesn't need help for anything, he knows who he is, they ... expelled him," Gload told the Sun Sentinel.

School President Richard Grimm would not comment on the issue " because it involves private information about a former student," but he said the school's policies are based on biblical values.

"It was just completely wrong," said Woodard, who had attended the school for three years, adding that the teacher "outed" him before he was ready. "It's just a horrible thing. I just don't want this to ever happen to another student again."

Gload, a mother of two, said she sent her son to the school because he is a devout Christian and the school is within walking distance of their home.

But, they acknowledge they will have a difficult time in court.

Palm Beach County has an ordinance protecting gay rights in employment and public housing, but schools are not included in that ordinance. And private schools have the right to discriminate because of sexual orientation under Florida state law.

"Unfortunately, in the state of Florida, discrimination based on sexual orientation is not specifically prohibited by any law," said Karen Doering an attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights in Tampa.

"When it comes to public schools, it is clear the Constitution protects youth based on sexual orientation; however, that does not apply to private schools."
