Prince Charles Supports Gay Bishop

(London) The Prince of Wales has waded into the controversy surrounding the consecration of the first openly gay Anglican bishop with comments certain to enrage church conservatives.

Gene Robinson will formally be elevated to become the Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire on Sunday. Prince Charles, in an interview with the Telegraph newspaper, said that he did not "relish" the argument surrounding the election of Cannon Robinson but said the church needs to modernize.

The prince will become titular head of the Anglican Faith when he becomes king. He said that the Church must relax its views on morality or face "odd" situations such as feud that erupted over Robinson or his own controversial relationship with his companion Camilla Parker Bowles.

Prince Charles argued that the two were cohabiting rather than marrying because the rules of the Church of England stopped divorcees remarrying in church.

The Church of England relaxed its absolute prohibition last year, but it drew up guidelines which could prevent the couple being granted a church wedding.

The prince told the newspaper that it was his desire that the Anglican Communion would hold together. Conservatives within the church are threatening to break away over Robinson's election.

More than 6,000 people are expected to attend Sunday's consecration. At the service Bishop-elect Robinson will be flanked by his ex-wife, his two daughters and his partner, Mark Andrews.
