(Washington, D.C.) Smelling the growing possibility Democrats could defeat President
George W. Bush next year National Stonewall Democrats are launching an aggressive
campaign on the nation's campuses.
NSD, the national organization for gay Democrats, said Tuesday it will concentrate its electoral efforts on getting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender college students.
A new poll released Tuesday shows that of committed voters a majority would reject Bush. The poll, from Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion, found that 44 percent of voters surveyed said they planned to definitely vote against the Republican president while 38 percent said they would vote for his re-election.
The largest group opposing Bush is college students, but history shows, young people are less likely to vote than older citizens.
Today, NSD announced the formation of the Stonewall Student Network, to get students to the polls next November.
The network will provide a forum to connect LGBT student activists across the country, and will lend a national voice to LGBT Democrats on college campuses, the organization said in a statement.
To kick off the Stonewall Student Network, NSD Executive Director Dave Noble
and Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) will speak to 200 members of the University
of Michigan Stonewall Democrats at a rally Sunday Ann Arbor.
NSD says it already has 20 campus groups and expects to add to that over the
next year.
