Presbyterians Engulfed In Gay Feud

(Lenoir, North Carolina) The Presbyterian Church is the latest faith to suffer cracks over the role of gays. A powerful conservative group that accuses Church hierarchy of turning a blind eye to the ordination of gays is asking congregations and individuals to consider halting contributions to national agencies of the church.

Presbyterian Lay Committee says the church leaders' "refusal to require compliance" with the church's constitution - an apparent reference to a provision barring actively gay pastors and lay officers - has seriously damaged the Church.

"We are two faiths within one denomination", the committee says. And "without systemic change the PCUSA will collapse" due to irreconcilable differences between liberals and conservatives.

The North Carolina-based Committee wields considerable power. It has its own widely circulated newspaper, a donor base of 26,000 and annual receipts that have topped $2million.

It uses the paper to press its own issues, and in a statement this week is urging all churches within the denomination to divert money from two of the Church's main funding mechanisms — per capita assessments and payments to church mission activities.

The Lay Committee has long complained about what it sees as a liberal church bureaucracy in Louisville that is supporting homosexuality and theological views that question the divinity of Jesus Christ and the authority of the Bible.

The denomination currently bans ordination and marriages for noncelibate gay, although the issue repeatedly comes up for debate at its annual legislative sessions.

This year in Denver, delegates rejected the latest of several proposals to allow the ordination of gays and lesbians. Instead, they called for the denomination to await the results of a task force on the role of gays in the faith.
