(San Francisco, California) Gay activists are outraged at a comment made by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush during a cabinet meeting Wednesday.
The governor jokingly said that the people of San Francisco may be endangered and, "That's probably good news for the country."
The cabinet, in Tallahassee, the state capital, was discussing environmental issues and Bush was looking a map showing wildlife across the country.
"It looks like the people of San Francisco are an endangered species, which may not be a bad thing. That's probably good news for the country."
People in the room broke into laughter.
"Did I just say that out loud?" the governor asked.
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is demanding an apology from the governor.
"It's extremely insulting," said NGLTF executive director Matt Foreman, accusing Bush of attacking the city's large gay community.
"But of course I would say that gay people in Florida are far more endangered than gay people in California."
P.J. Johnston, a spokesman for the mayor said Willie Brown wasn't worried by the comment, and did not think it was a reflection on the gay community.
It is not the first time Bush has been accused of homophobic remarks. In 2000 he was also overheard by a reporter telling a group of Republican lawmakers he had "some juicy details" about the sexual orientation of a missing Miami girl's female caregivers.
