School Reverses Position Agrees Not To Expel Gays

(Denver, Colorado) A private school in Denver with a policy to expelling openly gay students has decided it's time to change.

But, it wasn't enlightenment that made Silver State Baptist School in Lakewood amend the homophobic student guide. It was money.

Last month the school was rejected under Colorado's school voucher program because of the policy.

Among Silver State's grounds for expulsion are "premarital sex, homosexuality and sexual perversion" are "reasons for automatic dismissal from our school."

This week, the school informed the Denver School Board that it had rewritten its rules.

DPS Board Chairwoman Elaine Berman pointedly asked district staff whether an admittedly gay student would be allowed to attend the school under its new policy. The answer was yes.

"There is nothing in the new discipline policy that promotes hatred in any way," Berman said.

However, the school is not ready to embrace sex among students. The policy now says "premarital sex and sexual perversion, between opposite and/or same sex students will constitute grounds for disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion."

Silver State Principal Rodolfo Gomez did not address DPS board members Thursday.

In a letter to the board, however, Gomez said the school agreed to the change "after careful reconsideration" of the original policy language.

"We teach our children to love one another, regardless of differences among them," the letter reads. "That also means we love all children who enter our doors even as we set standards for their behavior. . . . (W)e must love all our fellow human beings."

Acceptance of the school into the voucher program, when it is implemented in the fall of 2004, means low-performing students from poor families will be able to use state education funding to attend private schools.

Silver state has 202 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
