(Youngsville, Louisiana) Parents in the closely knit community of Youngsville are showing their support for a 7 year old boy who was disciplined for saying his mother is gay.
Sharon Huff says her son Marcus McLaurin was reprimanded and forced to repeatedly write I will never use the word gay in school again. In addition he was sent to behavioral counseling.
The trouble began when Marcus and other youngsters were lined up for recess and one child asked him about his mother and father.
He responded that he didnt have a mother and father; instead he has two mothers. When the other child asked why, Marcus told him that it was because his mother is gay. The other child then asked what that meant, and Marcus explained, Gay is when a girl likes another girl.
The incident, and the school district's refusal to apologize has become the talk of the town.
I think this child may be proud to have two moms, said resident Jane Vice. Vice has grown children and is raising her 3-year-old granddaughter. It would have pissed me off, too, if it would have happened to me, and Im far from being gay, she told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser.
Laura Plaisance said the child " should not be made to feel ashamed to talk about his family, she said. I dont think the mother is wrong. That is her personal life.
Joan Maturin has two grown children and grandchildren attending schools in the area told the Advertiser that people are going to live their own lives. This kid has just as much right as anybody else to talk about his family.
Kids talk, said Carnelia Christian. I dont think a 7-year-old would really understand what he is saying. The teacher should have taken him off to the side to talk to him. She didnt have to call him out in front of everybody.
Some residents in Youngsville may disapprove of homosexuality, but most said the boy and his family should be left alone and supported his right to talk about his family.
That sentiment was borne out in an unscientific Web poll conducted by the newspaper that asked, Which best describes your feelings about the punishment imposed on a 7-year-old Gallet Elementary student who said his mother is gay?
Of the nearly 1,000 people who voted, 83 percent said the district should apologize, 5 percent said the school overreacted but no harm was done, and 11 percent said the school was right to punish the boy. One percent of the people who answered the survey said they didnt know.
