Trading Spaces Gay Killing

(Auckland, New Zealand) An Auckland man, on trial for killing a celebrity designer who appeared regularly on the New Zealand version of Trading Spaces, wandered the streets after the murder singing a song about the way he did it his trial has been told.

The body of David McNee was found last July in his home. He had been beaten to death in what police allege was a frenzied attack.

The openly gay 55-year-old was known for the flamboyant style he brought to the television series, called Changing Rooms in New Zealand.

An Auckland court Monday heard that Philip Layton Edwards, 23, wore McNee's clothes, drank his alcohol and tried to sell his Audi sportscar in the days after the killing.

A friend of the accused, Martin James Te Amohanga-Nikora told the court about the "little rhyming poem" made up by Edwards - known on the street as "Tick".

"It went, 'First bashing, then strangulation, followed by suffocation'," he said.

Te Amohanga-Nikora is serving a jail sentence after pleading guilty to being an accessory to the robbery of McNee. Both Edwards and Te Amohanga-Nikora are homeless.

All three men had been drinking at a local bar. Edwards and Te Amohanga-Nikora left together on foot and McNee drove off in his car, but later pulled up on the street where the two were walking.

Edwards asked McNee to take him to Burger King and left Te Amohanga-Nikora behind.

The prosecution alleges that they ended up at McNee's house, where Edwards beat him to death. Edwards then covered up the body and had a shower in McNee's bath.

He stole clothing and alcohol that he loaded into the black Audi convertible and went to meet Te Amohanga-Nikora under the bridge where they slept.

Amohanga-Nikora told the court he was woken by Edwards, who said something like, "I killed him".

The trial continues.
