Chicago to Host 2006 Gay Games

(Chicago, Illinois) The Federation of Gay Games Tuesday announced that Chicago has been selected as the site for the 2006 Gay Games. The FGG was forced to find a new host city after Montreal, which was to have hosted the Games, split from the organization last November in a disagreement over control and money.

The Federation asked the two cities which originally lost out to Montreal to resubmit their bids and selected Chicago over Los Angeles.

"Chicago Games Inc. put together an extraordinary proposal that demonstrates significant community support, a sound financial plan, and an international vision for Gay Games VII," said Kathleen Webster, Federation co-president.

"We look forward to working closely with them to make the next Gay Games an outstanding event for all our participants."

Chicago organizers were jubilant.

"Chicago’s LGBT sports clubs, cultural institutions, government and business supporters are eager to welcome the world to our beautiful city, and to produce an unforgettable week of competition, cultural events, and camaraderie," said Dennis Sneyers and Sue Connolly, Chicago Games Inc. Co-Chairs, said in a statement.

"With Chicago’s amazing lakefront, gorgeous skyline, world class sports facilities, strong LGBT community and renowned sports fans, we believe there is no better place than Chicago to welcome Gay Games participants in 2006."

Gay Games VII will take place between July 15-22, 2006, just two week before the rival games called Rendezvous 2006 will be held in Montreal.

The timing of the two events will force teams around the world to choose between Chicago and Montreal and infuriated the Montreal group.

Rendezvous 2006 in statement called the FGG decision "irresponsible" and claimed to have broader support.

"Montreal 2006 is already guaranteed to be a large-scale success, thanks to the support it has obtained from hundreds of sports teams around the world," the statement said.

"Many American teams appear to have already chosen Montreal. Will they be unfairly frowned upon in their own country? American athletes should be allowed to decide for themselves."

Despite the wrangling between the two competing sports events, Chicago is also predicting success.
