(New York City) More than 1,000 gays and lesbians marched on New York City Hall this morning to demand marriage licenses for same-sex couples.
Several dozen of the protestors went into the building but when they arrived at the clerk's office they were told the city would not break state law. The group was handed detailed letters letters explaining Mayor Michael Bloomberg's position.
The mayor said yesterday that he would follow state Attorney General Elliot Spitzer's advice that a review of state law concluded it is illegal to marry same-sex couples. Bloomberg said rather than protesting at city hall, the demonstrators should go to Albany and get the law changed.
"We want the politicians to know that this isn't going away,' ' said Mara Gottlieb, 33, who was first in line with partner Camille Gonzalez, 38.
Others in group accused Bloomberg and Spitzer of using the legislation at the expense of the state constitution.
Outside, in a cold drizzle, the demonstrators chanted, "Gay, straight, black or white, marriage is a civil right."
Among the demonstrators were ministers, rabbis, local politicians and Kyan Douglas, one of the stars of 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'.
"I'd like to get married some day, so that's why I am here," said Douglas.
Last night Jason West, the mayor of New Paltz, pleaded not guilty to 19 charges of violating the state law for marrying more than 20 gay and lesbian couples in the small village north of New York last week.
Outside the court West was defiant saying he intends to perform more same-sex marriages this weekend. And, a second small town mayor, John Shields, in Nyack, said yesterday he too will begin performing marriages.
On the west coast yesterday Portland Oregon began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
