(Atlanta, Georgia) Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin is under pressure from LGBT activists after saying that the city's gay rights ordinance may not be worth the paper its printed on.
Franklin has been stalling on enforcing the law.
Earlier this month she told an LGBT business group that the ordinance which prohibits discrimination against gays and lesbians may not survive a court challenge.
Now, Georgia's largest LGBT civil rights group, has told Franklin to either enforce the law or rewrite it so it can survive a court challenge.
Franklin who received broad support for election by the city's gay community has been under fire for not taking action against an exclusive country club which refuses to recognize the partners of same-sex couples.
Atlanta's Human Relations Commission determined that Lee Kyser and Randy L. New were victims of discrimination when Druid Hills Country Club refused to grant their partners family memberships.
The club, which charges a $40,000 initiation fee and about $475 in monthly dues, told Kyser and New that their partners were welcome to join but not as a families. Family rates are considerably lower than separate memberships.
Kyser, a clinical psychologist, and New a lawyer, took the club to the Human Rights Commission alleging bias because of their sexuality.
Under the law Franklin could revoke the club's business and liquor licenses.
Druid Hills has vowed to fight the issue in court.
Chuck Bowen, executive director of Georgia Equality, accused the mayor of cowardice.
"She is riding the proverbial political fence and she is going to have to fall one way or the other," Bowen told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"We don't need to be lectured, we don't need to hear blame being assigned to a previous administration. We just need the mayor to do her job."
