(Washington) In the aftermath of a devastating election campaign that saw 11 states ban same-sex marriage the leader of the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization is out of a job.
After a year at the helm of the Human Rights Campaign Cheryl Jacques is being replaced.
Following a day of rumor and speculation that Jacques was being dumped an official statement released late Tuesday by HRC said that Jacques had resigned over "a difference in management philosophy."
Whether she tendered her resignation or if it had been requested by the board is not known. An HRC spokesperson refused comment on the question.
Prior to joining HRC Jacques served in the Massachusetts Senate. Her salary at HRC was reported to be in excess of $200,000.
Jacques was not available for comment on Tuesday night.
In its statement, Jacques is quoted as saying, "My priorities were to defeat the Federal Marriage Amendment, expand the organizations membership and fundraising capacity, increase our diversity and maintain a strong voice in the media.
Cheryl has achieved a great deal as HRC President, said HRC Board of Directors Co-chair Gwen Baba. We will miss her leadership and professionalism, but we understand her desire to move on to other challenges."
But, sources within HRC say there had been friction for some time between the Board on Jacques.
She first came under fire for "disinviting" comedian Margaret Cho from an LGBT rally during the Democratic National Convention. In a statement HRC said it cancelled Cho's performance because it feared she would be offensive in her attacks on President Bush. The organization was one of a number sponsoring the event and the action led the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to withdraw its support.
During the election campaign, HRC spent an unprecedented $6.5 million dollars to defeat anti-gay ballot measures, get-out-the-vote in targeted states and elect "fair-minded officials" to federal offices.
"To win equality we must aggressively fund it and fight for it," Jacques said in making the announcement.
Despite the campaign voters in all 11 states where gay marriage amendments were on the ballot endorsed the bans.
HRC Board of Directors Co-chair Michael Berman and Hilary Rosen will lead the organization through the transition while a search for a new leader is underway. Berman is president of The Duberstein Group in Washington and Rosen led HRCs strategic efforts to defeat of the FMA.
