(Annapolis, Maryland) For the second time the Naval Academy's alumni board has rejected a bid from graduates who wanted to start a gay and lesbian alumni chapter.
The group is the only one the Naval Academy Alumni Association has ever turned
down. But, in doing so, the association Thursday carefully avoided saying it
was because of the sexuality of the chapter's members.
The Annapolis grads had been hopeful that they would be sanctioned.
In rejecting the first application, last December, the NAAA said that the group's charter was based too specifically on a special interest, its membership would be too exclusive, and it wasn't centered on a geographical area.
The naval grads reworked their charter and felt they had overcome those issues.
They dropped their original name, USNA Out, no longer sought to be a national chapter, and said they would accept non gay grads.
The geographic base was to be San Francisco and the new name they chose was the Castro Chapter of the Naval Academy Alumni Association.
But, the changes were not good enough for the NAAA. It says it rejected the bid because of the group's scattered membership and its location in San Francisco - a region already served by an alumni chapter. It also said it would continue to reject any group focused on what it called "a special interest".
The group now has 68 members and organizers accuse the NAAA of discrimination.
