(Laguna Beach, California) Joseph Hansen, one of the first mystery novelists to incorporate gay characters in his stories, has died. He was 81.
Writing under the penname James Colton, Hanson wrote 12 novels featuring the gay protagonist, Dave Brandstetter, a tough, street-smart gumshoe.
The first in the series was published in 1970, at a time when gay subject matter was mostly taboo.
In all, Hansen wrote nearly 40 books, including mainstream novels and a series of semi-autobiographical works based on his early years as a struggling writer.
In the 1960s, he worked for the gay magazine One and later for the magazine Tangents.
He also produced the radio show "Homosexuality Today" for KPFK FM
in the late 1960s and helped co-found the first Gay Pride Parade in Hollywood
in 1970.
Despite being openly gay, Hansen married a woman, Jane Bancroft.
He once described their relationship as that of a gay man and woman who happened to love each other.
"Here was this remarkable person who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We were married 51 years. So something was right about it, however bizarre it may seem to the rest of the world," he said.
Bancroft died in 1994.
The couple had a daughter who later underwent female-to-male gender reassignment. He is Hansen's only survivor.
Hansen died of heart failure at his Laguna Beach home.
