(Atlanta, Georgia) Atlanta Police shut down a bar that was showing the hit musical Naked Boys Singing on Saturday night claiming the the business didn't have an adult entertainment license.
But the manager of The Armory bar in midtown Atlanta said police overreacted Saturday night. He said the local production of the play is theater - not adult entertainment.
"Naked Boys Singing," is billed as a musical revue that "celebrates the splendors of male nudity in comedy, song and dance." It features six male actors who are in the buff for much of the performance.
The New York production of the show is now in its sixth year where it has been critically acclaimed. A Chicago production is in its third year and it just opened in Indianapolis. It has been translated into six languages and has played Sao Paulo Brazil, Sidney Australia, Rome, London, Paris, and has toured Norway.
The Atlanta raid occurred hours after thousands of African Americans marched through the city to denounce same-sex marriage. (story) The production had been running since August without incident.
Three plainclothes police officers entered the bar and observed part of the 8 p.m. show, which was in a small theater next to the bar, then shut it down. They issued manager Doug Youngblood a citation.
Youngblood was later allowed to reopen the bar, but the 10 p.m. performance was canceled. He said he hopes to be able to show the play again soon.
Lawyers for the club say they will fight the charges.
