(Hollywood, California) Queer As Folk will be coming up Rosie when it begins its new season in 2005. Rosie O'Donnell is joining QAF.
O'Donnell contacted co-executive producer Ron Cowen earlier this year and said she's a fan of the show and would like to do a guest shot. Cowan offered her a permanent role.
But, Rosie will appear in only three episodes of the new season. She'll join the cast in Toronto, where the series is shot, early in the new year. O'Donnell turned down the permanent role saying it would take her away from her family too long.
Rosie O'Donnell married her longtime partner Kelli Carpenter in a ceremony in San Francisco in February. The couple has four children.
Cowan said that in the three episodes O'Donnell will play an abused wife who flees to Pittsburgh to start a new life. The character will get a job as a waitress working with Debbie Novotny, played by Sharon Gless.
In the second of the three episodes we learn there is something about Rosie's character she's been keeping from us as she gets chummy with Debbie. The third episode wraps it all up.
But, it may not be the last of the character. Cowan says she may come back if Rosie can work it into her schedule.
In 2002, ODonnell appeared on Will & Grace in 2002, playing the gay mom of Jack's sperm-bank produced son. Next year, she will be in the TV movie Riding the Bus with My Sister.
In 2003 she was involved in a nasty lawsuit with publisher Gruner & Jahr over the now defunct magazine which bore her name. She also produced the short-lived Broadway musical Taboo based on the life of Boy George.
