(Topeka, Kansas ) Supporters of anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps claim to have enough signatures to force the repeal of Topeka's gay civil rights ordinance.
Last month the city council voted 5 - 4 to approve the law which bans discrimination in city hiring practices but not the private sector. Nor does it cover the transgendered.
During the debate in council Phelps' followers attacked the ordinance claiming it "endorses sin".
Several times during presentations Topeka Mayor James McClinton interrupted speakers. "We will not become a circus in here tonight," the mayor said.
Once the ordinance was passed, Phelps, whose Westboro Baptist Church is based in Topeka immediately began collecting signatures. The church, which has been described as a cult, proposes a new ordinance to block special protections for gays, lesbians or bisexuals.
Under the city charter a petition drive would need 3,700 valid signatures from registered voters. Church members say they collected more than 6,300.
If enough signatures are verified, the repeal proposal would to the council, which can approve it or put it to a public vote.
Phelps and his followers, mostly family members, gained national attention when they staged a noisy anti-gay rally at the funeral of Matthew Shepard. Since then they have regularly held protests against gay rights across the country and operate the God Hates Fags website.
