(Bedford, Massachusetts) A Bedford parents group is demanding that pink triangles be removed from the doors of some classrooms. The stickers designate the rooms to be safe zones for LGBT youth where gay students can seek support and advice.
The safe zone program was a collaborative effort between the schools and the Department of Education. Massachusetts law prohibits discrimination based on "race, color, sex, religion, national origin or sexual orientation." The stickers were provided by the National Youth Advocacy Coalition.
The program has been in effect at Bedford Public Schools for the past six years and until now no one has complained.
But, this month 30 parents attended a School Committee meeting demanding the stickers be removed from John Glenn Middle School
Most of the parents were members of a group called Families For Truth, led by Pamela Clare. Clare told the meeting that she was shocked when her daughter told her about the pink triangle program.
Clare said she would have no problem with the stickers being displayed in the
high school, but that middle school children are too young.
"You as a committee have not used common sense or decency in your policy
making," she said.
Other parents called the program immoral.
The sticker issue was not on the meeting's agenda and the committee took no action, but the parent group said it intends to keep fighting until the triangles are removed.
