(Telluride, Colorado) A Colorado website that promotes ski holidays in Telluride is advising families to stay away from the town during the annual Gay Ski Week.
The site is run by Al Heirich, a town resident, who books tours and lodging in the Rocky Mountain community.
"We are strongly suggesting that families concerned with exposing their children to the homosexual lifestyle and homosexual behavior schedule their vacations another time," the website says.
"Events are planned throughout the week in both towns celebrating and promoting the homosexual lifestyle."
Heirich is also concerned about an AIDS benefit to be held in conjunction with ski week.
"The combining of Gay Ski Week with the sexually oriented Aids Benefit Fashion Show (although very entertaining for adults) is not generally an event for the family."
The posting has not only angered gays in the town and organizers of Gay Ski Week, but also a lot of businesses.
One resort, Telluride Ski Resort, which is a sponsor of Ski Week has demanded that Heirich remove a link to it from his site.
In its email to Heirich the company said that it does not discriminate but, "obviously your website does not reflect that same message.
It isn't the first time Heirich has attacked Gay Ski Week. Last year in a letter to the editor of the local paper, The Daily Planet, Heirich called the event "embarrassing."
" It's not about whether gay tourists come here and visit, nor is it about the fact that those opposed to homosexuality might stay away if we have a Gay Ski Week. It's about Telluride losing it's unique ability to blend," his letter said.
"I hear and read the liberal rant of how those opposed to a Gay Ski Week are homophobic, intolerant and hateful. I'm against Gay Ski Week and not because of any moral or religious belief. I'm against it because we are now so desperate for tourists that we feel the need to label groups or individuals."
Heirich said the paper refused to print a similar letter this year.
Gay Ski Week in Telluride this year runs from February 26 - March 6.
