Renewed Anti-Gay Attacks At California School

(Mill Valley, California) A northern California high school hit by a series of homophobic attacks last year is experiencing a new outbreak.

Last year the attacks were aimed at a lesbian student. Now they have been expanded to include a lesbian teacher at Mill Valley's Tamalpais High School.

Police are investigating "die fag'" messages scrawled on the door of the teacher's classroom and on the car of the 17-year old student.

The attacks began last November.

The girl, whose name is not being released, has been pelted with eggs, had her locker and car vandalized, and has been flooded with handmade hate messages. Earlier this week the words "Die Fag" were spray painted in 2-1/2-foot letters on the school's wall.

Police have labeled the attacks "hate crimes" but so far no arrests have been made and police say they have "no strong leads."

Both the Mill Valley Police Department and the Marin County Sheriff's Office are working on the investigation.

"It is amazing to me that whoever is doing this is so ignorant and bigoted, but yet smart enough not to make the kind of mistakes not to get them caught yet," teacher Lisa Miller told the Marin Independent-Journal.

The teenaged student has been getting help from a school psychologist since the incidents began.

Students and staff at the school have rallied to support the victims.

Later this month at the school's annual multicultural assembly there will be special emphasis on the school's "zero tolerance" policy for hate crimes.

Also, at its staff development day for teachers later this month the school plans to brief teachers on ways to identify homophobic behavior and ways to support gay and lesbian students.

The Tamalpais High School Foundation has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identity of anyone responsible for the acts.
