(Tampa, Florida) A Tampa area man is accused of using a so-called date rape drug to seven men and then sexually assaulting them.
Steven Lorenzo, 45, waived his right to appear in U.S. District Court and the not guilty plea was entered on his behalf on Wednesday.
The original indictment against Lorenzo listed six victims. The seventh was added in court Wednesday after the victim came forward.
Police say that the assaults occurred between 2000 and 2003. They said that Lorenzo met four of the men at Tampa gay bars. A fifth man said he was picked up by Lorenzo while working as a street hustler. A sixth man said he met Lorenzo in an online chatroom. Police have not said how the seventh man was met.
In court papers police say that Lorenzo took the men home and slipped drugs in their drinks. Later, they told police, they all awoke to signs of non-consensual sex attacks.
According to the court documents Lorenzo bought the date rape drugs from Canada on the Internet. Last August, U.S. Postal Inspectors in Tampa intercepted a parcel of drugs mailed to Lorenzo's house.
When questioned by a Drug Enforcement Agency officer Lorenzo admitted he had ordered the drugs online. Throughout the interview, Lorenzo "repeatedly made the statement, 'I'm gay. I'm ... I'm gay,'" the court papers say.
According to a report in the Tampa Tribune authorities are also investigating whether Lorenzo is connected to the disappearance two years ago of another gay man in Tampa - Jason Galehouse, 26, and the killing of Michael Wachholtz, 26.
"We're looking at all avenues and the possibility of his being connected,'' U.S. Attorney spokesman Steve Cole told the Tribune. "But, at this time, we can't go beyond that.''
Lorenzo remains in jail with no bail.
