(Los Angeles, California) For five years a Las Angeles non profit clinic treating gays and lesbians provided patients with syphilis the wrong treatment, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control.
The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center says that between January 1999 and March 2004 the clinic used a nonrecommended preparation of penicillin. The report says that 429 patients with syphilis and 234 of their sexual contacts were incorrectly treated with Bicillin C-R.
The recommended drug - Bicillin L-A, contains 2.4 million units of benzathine penicillin G. The preparation that inadvertently was used - Bicillin C-R, contains a mixture of 1.2 MU benzathine penicillin G and 1.2 MU procaine penicillin
At least one of the patients is believed to have progressed to a more serious form of syphilis because of the error.
The mixup only came to light after a patient treated for syphilis read the product insert, which stated that Bicillin C-R was not indicated for treatment of syphilis.
Databases from the clinic and from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Sexually Transmitted Disease Program were used to identify patients who were improperly treated.
Clinic staff attempted to reach syphilis patients and contacts treated with Bicillin C-R by letter and three telephone calls.
The CDC said in its report that it is concerned that other facilities may have made the same mistake as the L. A. clinic. "Providers, STD clinics, and pharmacies should review their product records and tracking systems for ordering and delivering penicillin treatments for syphilis," the report states.
After the error became known, the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration have worked with the drugs' manufacturer, King Pharmaceuticals, to change the product labeling and to print warnings on Bicillin C-R syringes and packaging.
