(London) British Prime Minister Tony Blair says that Britain will one day have a gay Prime Minister.
"I don't think people would reject a Prime Minister simply on the basis that he was gay," Blair said in an interview with the gay magazine Attitude.
He also told the magazine that there are "plenty" of homosexual ministers just below Cabinet level.
Blair also used the interview to urge the Anglican Church to resolve its differences over openly gay bishops. He said many people in the Church shared his view that the fundamental Christian principle is one of equality.
The magazine also published an interview with Conservative leader Michael Howard.
Howard told Attitude that he has changed his mind about the controversial Section 28, which banned schools from "promoting homosexuality."
The bill passed when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minster was repealed by the Blair government but with considerable opposition from Conservatives.
“I thought, rightly or wrongly, there was a problem in those days. That problem simply doesn’t exist now. It’s not a problem, so the law shouldn’t be hanging around on the Statute Book.”
With an election in the offing, the mea culpa by Howard, and Blair's strong support for gays may have more to do with gaining the pink vote than any new initiatives.
The same article included an interview with Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy in which he claimed that many gays are switching to his party because of their disenchantment about the “unfinished agenda” on gay rights of the two more established parties.
“As long as the Tories are hung up on gay issues, people will think they’re weird,” said Kennedy.
