(Montgomery, Alabama) Legislation has been filed in the Alabama legislature that would bar gays and lesbians from adopting children.
The bill sponsored by Sen. Hank Erwin Jr. (R-Montevallo) would make it illegal for a person who is gay to adopt a minor.
The state already bars same-sex couples from adopting under its Marriage Protection Act.
Erwin said his measure is consistent with the state's stance on gay issues pointing to the Marriage Protection Act and the Legislature's recent approval of a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. The proposed amendment, which also prohibits the state from acknowledging same-sex unions, will go to voters in 2006.
"We need to be consistent," Erwin said in a recent interview. "If we are going to say we are a family-friendly state with traditional family values, then we need to have traditional family adoption policies."
There are currently 641 children in the state awaiting adoption.
Recently attempts to ban gays from adopting failed in two other Southern states, Virginia and Kentucky.
Erwin's bill in Alabama is one of a number of anti gay measures the legislature is dealing with this session that began with the proposed constitutional amendment.
The state is also looking at a bill that would ban gay speech from any institution which receives state money.
