(London) An international banking conglomerate has agreed to stop requiring couples to state their sexuality, and if gay to provide with proof both partners are HIV-negative, in order to obtain mortgages.
The policy came to light after a same-sex couple complained publicly when they were told they must take an HIV test to qualify for a home loan by a branch of the HSBC in Porthmadog, in northern Wales.
HSBC, based in the UK owns banks throughout the northeastern US and Canada. It is believed the North American HSBC banks to not use the same form.
The men, whose full names have not been revealed, complained about the requirement to LGBT rights group Stonewall.
"One of the questions was: 'Are you a part of, or have you ever been part of the following groups - bisexual, homosexual or an intravenous drug user?'" one of the men told the BBC, identifying himself only as Stuart.
"We, of course, said we were gay and simply on that, it said on the computer screen we would be offered life cover on the proviso we take the HIV test.
"I felt dirty and so did my partner, we felt incredibly dirty as if we'd done something wrong.
"It was purely on the grounds that we were gay, basically discrimination against us," he added.
Following the intervention of the Welsh branch of Stonewall HSBC said it would remove the questions from its mortgage application forms.
