(Richmond, Virginia) Legislation that could have been used to block gay-straight alliances from meeting after school on Virginia school grounds has died in a Senate committee.
The bill would have allowed local school boards to prohibit the use of school facilities by groups they believe encourage promiscuity.
The measure passed the House in January.
The bill's sponsor, Del. Matthew Lohr (R-Harrisonburg) argued before the Senate Education and Health Committee that the legislation was not targeting gay-straight alliances and was only aimed at “clubs that promote a hidden agenda” and that may serve as groups that promote premarital sex.
But senators were not convinced.
“All (these groups) were teaching was respect and tolerance,” said Sen. Janet Howell (D-Fairfax). She noted that she had paid to a gay-straight alliance group in her district. “It had nothing to do with sex at all,” she said.
Sen. Russell Potts (R-Winchester), another member of the committee, said school boards already have the authority to determine which groups can use school facilities. He argued that Lohr’s bill unfairly targeted gay-straight alliances.
The committee voted 9-6 to kill the bill.
Although the measure cannot be taken up again this year, Lohr said he will reintroduce the bill next year.
