Sox Manager Unleashes Homophobic Rant

(Chicago, Illinois) Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is under fire after unleashing a homophobic diatribe against a Chicago Sun-Times reporter just prior to Tuesday night's game.

The attack against reporter Jay Mariotti was caught on tape and occurred in front of about 20 other journalists covering the game.

"What a piece of shit he is, fucking fag,'' Guillen said, referring to Mariotti.

Guillen was set off by an article the reporter had written about Guillen's management skills.

It isn't the first time Guillen has had a homophobic outburst.

“Hey, everybody, this guy’s a homosexual! He’s a child molester,” Guillen told reporters about man, linking both gays and child molestors.

Guillen was forced to apologize for that rant and demands are growing for an apology for Tuesday's outburst about Mariotti.

Spokespersons for the Gay Games and Equality Illinois have demanded an apology from Guillen.

"Fag is the most insulting term possible," said the Games' Kevin Boyer. E.I.'s called the outburst "offensive."

Although Mariotti has not commented on the Tuesday night incident fellow Sun-Times reporter Greg Couch took Guillen to task on Wednesday, noting that too often teammates dismiss Guillen's outbursts.

"Guillen is not dumb," Couch writes. "Let's not insult him. He knows what he's saying, and he certainly knows that it's not acceptable. He has been in this country for a quarter of a century. This offseason, I went to his swearing-in as a U.S. citizen.

"He was wrong. And he needs to apologize."

Couch, in his column called for Guillen's suspension.

Confronted after the game by Couch Guillen said that in his native Venezuela, that word is not a reference to a person's sexuality, but to his courage.

He also told Couch that he has gay friends, goes to WNBA games, went to the Madonna concert and plans to attend the Gay Games in Chicago.

"The rest of Guillen's rant was wild, and maybe acceptable," writes Couch in his column. "Until he said [deleted] fag. Not in public. Not in private. We don't say that."
