(San Francisco, California) As San Francisco prepares to celebrate LGBT pride this weekend the city's Arts Commission on Thursday said that plans to erect a statue to assassinated gay Supervisor Harvey Milk are moving ahead.
The commission said that it hopes the statue, to be placed in front of City Hall, will be unveiled in 2008. But so far no artist has been hired to create it.
This week the commission issued a call for artists across the country to submit proposals by August 1.
Plans to erect a statue honoring Milk have been in the works since 2004. The commission said that it hopes to select the design finalists in September.
They will be paid $2,500 to develop their proposals and the winner will be chosen by January 2008.
The bulk of the funding for the project will come from the Bob Ross Foundation, named for the founder and former publisher of San Francisco's Bay Area Reporter.
Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California. On Nov. 27, 1978, after less than a year in office Milk was gunned down in his City Hall office by former Supervisor Dan White.
White who had quit his job on the Board of Supervisors and wanted it back blamed Milk for blocking his return.
After shooting the highly popular politician, White turned his gun on Mayor George Moscone killing him as well.
White served five years in prison for the killings and committed suicide after being released.
There already is a sculpture of Moscone outside San Francisco's City Hall.
