(Des Moines, Iowa) Des Moines police are searching for the person or persons behind homophobic vandalism attacks on eight cars in the city over the weekend.
In three of the instances pictures of naked men were glued to the vehicles and they were sprayed with shaving cream. Five other cars had images of male sex organs and homophobic and racial slurs scratched into them, the Des Moines Register reports.
Police have listed the attacks as hate crimes.
An empty shaving cream can was found near one of the cars and forensics experts are determining if there are usable finger prints on the car the paper said.
It is unclear what sparked the weekend attacks. Gay Pride in the city was in June and a highly publicized case challenging Iowa's so-called Defense of Marriage law is not due to be heard until fall.
In the marriage case, six same-sex couples filed suit last December.
The suit argues that under the equal protection and due process guarantees in the Iowa State Constitution it is unlawful to bar same-sex couples from marrying. Since the lawsuit is based on state law, the Iowa Supreme Court will have the final word on the outcome of the case.
Twenty-sex conservative lawmakers earlier this month made an application to enter the case but no decision has been made by the court.
