(Chicago, Illinois) The host of nationally syndicated HIV/AIDS radio program Aware Talk Radio is accused of stealing more than $1.4 million from the non-profit organization the produces it.
The Illinois attorney general's office is suing host Christopher DeChant, alleging that he diverted the money into his personal checking accounts.
The suit also names Kim Leffert, a member of the charitable group's board of directors.
The lawsuit claims that the pair signed 21 checks between February 1999 and April 2004 from the non-profit agency's bank account.
Court documents allege that the the checks were payable to New World Media, a company the attorney general's office says was a fictitious.
The lawsuit charges that DeChant had opened back accounts under the New World Media name and then used the money for his own use.
DeChant has not responded to the suit. He is listed as the creator, executive producer and host of AWARE Talk Radio.
The program is the nation's only weekly, syndicated, radio program providing focusing on HIV/AIDS and claims to be heard on 400 stations across the country..
DeChant's biography lists him as a member of the FDA Task Force on HIV Fraud, The AIDS Foundation of Chicago's HIV/AIDS Service Providers Committee and The National HIV Community Treatment Coalition.
